La biofiltrazione è una tecnologia mediante la quale le emissioni gassose da trattare vengono convogliate attraverso un mezzo poroso biologicamente attivo.

Non si tratta altro che di una sorta di letto costituito da materiali quali corteccia, legno triturato, compost maturo e torba, mantenuti a condizioni costanti di temperatura e umidità e colonizzati da microrganismi aerobici in grado di degradare i composti da trattare presenti nel flusso d'aria.

È importante sottolineare che la colonizzazione e le attività metaboliche avvengono all'interno del biofilm, che in questo caso è il film d'acqua che si crea attorno alle particelle della parte solida di cui è costituito il biofiltro.

Prima di lasciare il letto filtrante, il flusso d'aria si arricchisce di anidride carbonica, degli altri composti organici volatili prodotti e del calore generato dalle reazioni biochimiche.
