VOC treatment in the cosmetics industry

In this case study, we present the solution implemented for a company operating in the cosmetic industry, characterized by production processes involving the use of solvents and volatile raw materials. The objective of the project was to reduce high concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), specifically Isododecane, ensuring full compliance with emission limits set by current environmental regulations and the applicable Regional BAT guidelines.

voc treatment in the cosmetics industry

Problems

  • High concentrations of VOCs (Isododecane) in process gas streams (> 1 kg)
  • Emission limit ≤ 20 mg/Nm³ at the stack
  • Variability of operating conditions (flow rate and temperature)
  • High pollutant load at the inlet
  • Regulatory obligation for emission monitoring and compliance

Technical features of the two-stage system

  • Abatement system: condensation + activated carbon
  • Design airflow: 2,000 Nm³/h (operating) – 4,000 Nm³/h (maximum)
  • Guaranteed emission limit: ≤ 20 mg/Nm³
  • Activated carbon system with external regeneration
  • Electrical control panel
  • HF Monitoring system (Cloud-based)
Solutions

We designed and supplied a two-stage abatement system consisting of a condensation unit followed by an activated carbon adsorption system with external regeneration. The condensation phase, carried out through a condenser powered by a dedicated chiller unit, cools the gas stream and converts Isododecane into liquid phase, significantly reducing the incoming VOC load. The final activated carbon treatment ensures adsorption of residual compounds and full compliance with emission limits.

Advantages
  • Significant VOC reduction
  • Full compliance with emission regulations
  • High-efficiency progressive abatement system
  • Optimized operating costs
  • Continuous 24/7 monitoring
  • Enhanced environmental and operational safety
  • Engineered solution in accordance with applicable BAT guidelines
