VOC treatment in the chemical industry

In this case study, we present the solution implemented for an Italian company operating in the chemical industry, also active in the development of solutions and materials for the cosmetics sector. The project focused on the treatment of ammonia (NH₃) emissions generated by the production process, with the aim of ensuring effective pollutant abatement and continuous monitoring of air quality within the production area.

voc treatment in the chemical industry

Problems

  • Presence of ammonia in the process gas streams
  • Need to treat an airflow rate of 2,500 Nm³/h
  • Requirement for a reliable NH₃ abatement system
  • Need to control and regulate the scrubbing process
  • Requirement to continuously monitor ammonia concentration within the production area

Technical features Scrubber:

  • No. 1 single-stage wet scrubber
  • Design airflow rate: 2,500 Nm³/h
  • PP tower and recirculation circuit
  • Reagent: sulfuric acid
  • Automatic pH control
  • Recirculation pump: 10 m³/h – 3 kW
  • Centrifugal fan: 2,500 m³/h – 3 kW
  • Electrical control panel with inverter
  • Ambient NH₃ sensor with audible and visual alarm
  • Connection ducting and exhaust stack
Solutions

HFiltration designed and installed a wet scrubber abatement system, featuring a PP tower and controlled dosing of sulfuric acid to remove ammonia from the gas stream. The system integrates recirculation of the scrubbing liquid, pH control, a high-efficiency demister, and a dedicated fan. The solution is completed by an ambient NH₃ sensor for continuous monitoring, equipped with audible and visual alarms.

Advantages
  • Effective abatement of ammonia emissions
  • Improved workplace safety
  • Continuous monitoring of NH₃ concentration
  • Automatic control of scrubbing conditions
  • Complete and integrated emission management system
  • Solution compliant with applicable Regional BAT requirements
