Dust management in metallurgical casting processes

In this case study, we worked with an Italian foundry that specializes in the production of cast iron and aluminum components through casting processes. It offers customized casting services to meet the needs of customers in the industrial and automotive sectors.

dust management in metallurgical casting processes

Problems

The project involved the replacement of an old dust filtering system, which had come to an end after 30 years of honorable service. It was necessary to adapt the current regulatory requirements of the foundry industry to the operational problem, dealing with aggressive dust from deburring, grinding, sandblasting and shotblasting processes, which are characterized by a high degree of abrasion.

Technical features HJL BAG

  • N° 1 filter HJL-BAG-45-643-33
  • Electrical pannel with inverter
  • Air flow rate: 36.000 m³/h
  • N° 363 sleeves (Ø 125 mm x 4500 mm length each)
  • Outlet dust concentration:
  • Filter surface area: about 650 m²
Solutions

We have developed a HJL Bag dust collector with a flow rate of 36.000 m3/h that complies with stack clearance. The filtering surface was adapted to ensure optimal filtration rate and upflow for the specific application. Due to minimize production downtime during installation, the work was planned in two phases: first the assembly of the new filtration system, followed by the dismantling and removal of the old unit. This approach ensured the impact on the production cycle was kept to a minimum.

Advantages

Replacing the old system has brought many benefits, including:

  • Environmental protection.
  • The health preservation of operators.
  • Reduced operating and maintenance costs.
